Behavior

Recommended for experienced dog handlers.
Best if the only pet in the home.

The American Foxhound is a highly energetic dog that loves to take long walks and play fetch. They are a gentle, kind, loving and loyal breed of dog with a laid-back personality. Foxhounds are a mild-tempered breed and known to be good with children.

If you have other pets in the house, be sure to supervise their meetings until you're certain your Foxhound won't hurt them. This is a hunting breed and, though they do generally get along with cats and other family pets, it is best to be cautious.

Since foxhounds were bred to run, it's necessary to provide an abundant amount of space and exercise to keep them fit. They were bred to hunt and will take advantage of any opportunity to engage in "the chase" so they are best kept on a leash or in a secured area, especially if other pets and small animals are around.

This is a pack hound with a strong desire for the company of other foxhounds.
